SuperCupNI Report | County Down 2-0 Argyle
Argyle lost to County Down 2-0 in their second SuperCupNI Group D match on Tuesday afternoon.
The Northern Irish side started immediately on the front foot, causing problems for Argyle from the get-go at Scroggy Road.
Within 15 minutes of the opening, County Down found themselves two goals up over the Greens. Their first goal came following an attack down the left flank, which ended with a strike that saw Tom Armytage, in the Argyle goal, get a touch on it, but not enough to stop the ball from finding the back of the net.
10 minutes after their first, County Down doubled their lead. A free-kick was sent into the area and caused problems for the Greens’ defensive line, ending with a volley into the far corner of the goal.
Argyle came close in the 25th minute when Zain Malik got onto the end of a loose pass and toe-poked an effort at goal, but saw it saved by the onrushing goalkeeper. Freddie Lewis then had a chance to shoot at the open goal, but his shot ran wide and out for a goal kick.
Head Coach Niall Cully made some changes at the break and early into the second half, but it was not enough to get back into the tie. County Down won a penalty in the final minute of the game but missed from the spot, after Alexander York-Stephens brought down their forward inside the area.
Argyle now turn their attention to their final Group D game on Wednesday, 29 July, against St Patrick’s Athletic. The tie kicks off at 3pm at Scroggy Road.
